I made it an entire year (and then some) without a single blog post. That would be quite an accomplishment if that had been my goal.

It isn't that I wasn't well-intentioned. I have a stack of notes, a few emails to self and even a couple of calendar reminders made to spur me in to posted. I just didn't seem to be able to sit down to write a few lines. Oh well.

It isn't that 2011 wasn't eventful. It was. Maybe, though, it was too eventful - I was too busy in it to comment upon it. Having said that - know that I do not mean that folks who blog are not busy or aren't 'in their moments' or anything. It seems that I was just more consumed than usual.

Anywho . . . I am clearing more clutter in 2012. This is for a couple of reasons . . . if it is truly the end of the world, I don't want a mess around me when it happens. If it isn't the end, I want a neater space. It is, really, the end of the world as we know it (as each day is anyway) and I want clarity and clean-flowing energy. I won't get that with pockets of clutter and piles of things around me. The energy will eddy and pool and, in some cases grow stagnant. No good!!

For a moment, during the paragraph above, I caught a whiff of perfume of violets or lily of the valley (I am not sure which). It was lovely. I shall write of decluttering more often if the aroma is associated with my thought patterns. :-)

Carry on . . .

The one in which there are clouds . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 166px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TKYgWH7OD2I/AAAAAAAAAE8/_hebUfrInfo/s200/clouds.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523137557473136482" />
Today is the kind of day where you don't know if you'd rather be at home or out and about. It is a beautiful day . . . it started sunny with few clouds. Now, though, the clouds look like an illustration from "The Simpsons" cartoon show. The colors are brilliant - almost unreal. The whites are perfect. I am smiling at the image of the coulds as them drift across the sky. I can, unfortunately, hear "The Simspons" theme song in my head . . . Yikes, what an ear worm!

There are a myriad of manners in which to describe sky and clouds. I've got two specific references. The first is like the clouds described above. These are lofty and bright and seem, somehow, unreal. Sometimes, though, there is a depth of field and a richness of hues and texture that is much like the Dutch skies that I associate with the paintings of Rembrandt van Rijn and artists of his era. These pieces have such richness that it seems a if I could reach out and touch the clouds.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 156px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TKYiKd6CxsI/AAAAAAAAAFE/q0qOkSZXYsQ/s200/dutch+sky.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5523139556238608066" />

I often wonder at the possibility of recreating these images in fiber. To be able to weave, knit or quilt them would be amazing. Of course, the fiber medium and my talent are so lacking that any attempt would only pale in comparison. Somehow, though, I don't mind that. I like looking up and marvelling at the beauty and the possibilities (will it rain?, is it cold?, are the winds coming?)

Instead, I think I want to be able to evoke the emotions that arise when I gaze upon the skies and the clouds. I am humbled by the vastness, amazed at the flexibility and constant change, and amused by the ever-forming shapes. Sure, sometimes I see cartoon skies and other times, I see the work of artistic masters. It makes me wonder of the artists who work in paint, those who we revere; did they doubt their talent in trying to recreate those visions.

Hmmm... now I ponder.

Carry On.

The one in which I find myself . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TJeNCsWJDHI/AAAAAAAAAE0/OXgPtd3dHz4/s200/trail_lg.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519034945769114738" />This last week has been extremely busy. I spent the week doing mundane stuff and getting ready for a magickal weekend. The mundane stuff included a regular monthly Royal Oak Animal Shelter Committee meeting. That is good work.

Sweetpea and I went to our first knitting guild meeting. It was the Black Sheep Knitting Guild in Berkely, Michigan. It was fun and a bit intimidating. There was so much wonderful talented energy. It was a room full of what seemed like 75 knitters all chatting and knitting and enjoying each others company. I got a load of knitting finished and I'll be excited to go back.

Mostly, I spent the week getting ready for the weekend. House Shadow Veil held a rite of passage called the Warrior Ritual or the Hunt. It was about finding and 'killing' those things about yourself that you want to eliminate. It can also be about finding and regaining a part of oneself but for me, it was identifying and eliminating.

There was a load of preparation work for the 'hunters' and for the Hunt Mistress and the Community. Sweetpea and Bunny were involved in it so the week, at our house, was a little frantic. My time was spent trying to complete my preliminary tasks and figure out what I needed to focus upon during the hunt. The latter was the most difficult. I know I have issues - we all have issues. I am not so arrogant as to think I don't need the work; I just wasn't sure where to start.

It took until the actual event to understand where I needed to go and what I needed to do. So much of life and my path is about patterns. My watch words are to live by balance, context and priorities. Within these concepts are patterns that change over time. Balance amongst the various elements of life changes as well. How I fit into life and into what I must do this time around and what is important also changes. Trying to be aware of the changes, to let go of the old stuff and to acknowledge and accept the new route can be hard. That's what the weekend was about.

I returned home dead tired and amazingly renewed. I have a much better idea of how to implement my mission here. I am so grateful to those who organized the event, those who hunted with me and to those who made it possible. I am, too, grateful that I was willing to swallow my pride and understand that I needed to do this work. I am not finished, I've just started this path. This weekend was turn on the path.
Thank you.

Carry on.

Sisterhood of the Travelling Socks

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 193px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TIakGzPJPWI/AAAAAAAAAEs/Ehm1Yr53zbM/s200/zen-classes.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514275230501649762" />
Okay, I didn't go to Sock Summit 2009. I was sad; I felt the loss. I knew that sock knitters from all over the world (okay, maybe not - I don't know) were gathering in Portland, Oregon and I couldn't join them. Some of the most famous, creative and amazing knitting personas were in Portland without me. Me, I was working hard having just acquired a new job and having recently seperated from Yorble. I was knitting socks but I was doing it in Michigan. There was a load of change in my life in 2009 and it took a bit getting used to all of the changes.

Fast forward to 2010 - life is a bit more settled. Sweetpea lives here and we both knit. Me, I knit socks. Her - not so much; at least, not yet. There is no Sock Summit this year. I suffer no loss, no stress or worries knowing it is happening without me. Whew!

Now, there will be one in 2011. It'll be at the same time as the First Harvest (Lammas) sabbat. Maybe next year will be time for me learn more about knitting socks. Maybe it'll be time to head back to the west coast; it has been so long since I've been out that way. I believe that is the case. 2011 will be the year of socks for me.

Okay, some of this enthusiasm and desire for travel a year from now is fueled by the discussion threads on Ravelry. I saw some folks' entries about hotels and restaurants and how amazing the classes were in 2009. I got to thinking about hotels and started to panic when I noted that many people were already making reservations. Oh No! It's only 11 months away! What if no rooms are left!!?!?!?!

I know that sounds crazy and doesn't sound a bit like the calm and cool person that you know me to be - but, there you go. Anyway, I checked a couple of hotels in the area and then just made a reservation. Some of the nearby hotels (near the Oregon Convention Center) were unable to give me a room for the entire stay. Oh no!!! I found one place that had rooms like I wanted and had them available. Also, their rate was reasonable. The reasonableness might be scary because I don't know the quality of the place but my wallet likes the idea. Whew, once again!

Now I've got to figure out how to get there. I checked into the train. Wouldn't that be amazing?!? I'd love to sit and knit as the country sped by. It is a reasonalbe cost to take the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland. It means, though, 45 hours in a seat. I could get a room on the train but that adds a hefty $600 per ticket (and, hopefully, Sweetpea will want to go). I thought about driving. All told, it is a 35 hour drive. There are two of us to drive and we could see some family along the way. Hmmmmmm.... we could share the driving and each have some time to knit. If gas prices remain stable, it would cost around $600 in fuel plus wear and tear on the car plus hotels (if we stop). All that gets to near the cost of a flight. Right now, some of the airlines have deals on flights. I am hoping that that'll keep up for a while. Fingers crossed!

Anyway, I have a room and I have the motivation to be able to get to Sock Summit 2011. What's next? I've got to convince Sweetpea that we should go, that we can afford it, that it is a good idea and that there are other wonderful things in Portland.

Hmmmm.....maybe I can lure her there with the promise of attending Fairieworlds. I hope it'll work.

Carry on.

Tea and Company

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 134px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TIEPjOuSv3I/AAAAAAAAAEc/Wfft94X0HUw/s200/tea+set.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512704516800298866" />
Tonight, once again, Sweetpea, Bunny and I are going to the tea shop after dinner. We'll go and listen to the musical artists because it is an open microphone night. Last week was fun and we had a great time. I also got a load of knitting done. In fact, I finished the first of the pair of mittens that I am knitting (more on that later).

We tasted a new kind of tea; it was a black tea called "First Love". While I enjoyed it, there were undertones to it that were unusual to me and I am not sure I liked it. The name of the tea was what drew me to it. Isn't first love just grand? Somehow, it doesn't matter if that love is a new person or place or a new activity. It might even be a new yarn, a new food dish or a new tv show. There is wonder in the promise of something new. We marvel at the potential of it. We admire the new thing or person and just take in the beauty of it all. That feeling is amazing.

So, last Friday was the first night at the tea shop and the first time that I had the "First Love" tea. It was the first time that the three of us have done a knitting gathering outside of one of our homes. We had fun watching the people, listening to the music and making note of the night life. We shared the joy of creating together even though we were working on different items. We had each others' support if something went wrong or we needed help.

It was a joy to share that creative energy - there was the energy of the night life, of the musicians trying out their new songs and voices and our energy in creating knitted items. Tonight, we'll have someone new with us. Bunny and Panda just started dating. Tonight we'll have the energy of their new relationship merging with our creative energy. What joy!

As with the "First Love" tea, all of life has undertones. Sometimes we miss them and sometimes we become caught up in them like the undertow of a body of water. I am sure that there was drama at the tea house last week. There were probably some relationship issues amongst the patrons. I'd bet that some of the musicians were nervous about performing. A lovey aspect of last week is that I didn't sense any of those undertones (except in the tea). I skated on the superficial and joyful energy of creativity and just went with the flow.

First love is about potential, about the unknown and about being in the moment. Creativity is about those as well. Ahhh, I am excited to experience aspects of it again.

Carry on. . .

P.S. The lovely picture, above, is from Mellow Monk Tea company (www.mellowmonk.com). It is a Japanese green tea company.

P.P.S. We've been going to a lovely shop called Goldfish Tea. You can find info at www.goldfishtea.com.

Dirty, Sexy, Knitting

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TH6v-nWsQDI/AAAAAAAAAEM/2eC48DKRiRM/s200/Rachel_5_little.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512036484198973490" />
Knitters are sexy! Yep! I said it and I meant it. Anyone who can take an item that looks like rolled up spaghetti or worms (I mean the yarn) and make it into a garment or a blanket or some other lovely, useful item is dead sexy! I am so tired of the 'my grandmother knits' line of discussion that I realized that it is time to represent. Finding this photo (and the associated calendar project) made me realize that I'd heard it again recently and I didn't react to it. I usually react and respond to such generalizations with polite, though often pointed, comment but I didn't that time. Shame on me!

I simply cannot tell you the number of times that someone has approached me when I am knitting in public and said those 3 dreaded words "my grandmother knits." I know that they are trying to relate and that seeing me knit might be taking them back to a lovely memory but really folks! What do these folks think? Every woman learns to knit when they become a grandmother?? Some might say that this is just to make conversation but I don't really think so. Do these same people go up to groups of older knitters and say "my cousin knits", "my teacher knits", or "my little brother knits"? No, they do not. This happened the other night when I was knitting with Sweetpea and Bunny (two young knitters) at the local tea house.

There is a renewed movement to knit lingerie - as was done decades ago. There are wonderful books out there with some great patterns. Just have a quick look at this book. There are some beautiful pieces in there.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 160px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TH6w_eRDehI/AAAAAAAAAEU/FomMHPhh1gA/s200/knittinglingerestyle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512037598450907666" />
Like creating in general, this is sexy to me; making sweaters is sexy and knitting lingerie is sexy. Gardening and sculpting and welding are sexy. Anything where one uses their imagination to create is sexy. Cripes, making furniture is sexy to me.

There isn't time or space to go into the arguments that we are all sexy regardless of age, size, etc., etc. We can be knitters (spinners, weavers, stitchers, quilters, etc.) regardless of age. When did the link between knitting and maturity set in? There was a time, not so long ago, when women had to master (mistress?) these skills before they wed in order to keep their families clothed and warm. There was also a time when knitting was a man's business. When did this change? Why do we need to categorize?

The photograph of the beautiful, sexy knitter at the top of this post came from a knitting-related calendar project you can find at Kickstarter.com
(http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1583990304/off-the-needles-a-knitting-pinup-calendar?pos=1&ref=search)

Go and give a dollar or two in support of this calendar. It is fun and seems like a great idea. Also, the concept of Kickstarter is great. Post a concept to get funding. Wow!

So, remember . . . knitters are whatever they want to be.

Carry on.

(P.S. I am not saying that grandmothers aren't sexy. I am simply merging a few concepts and attempting to increase awareness for the calendar project and the website.)

Thinking about the harvest. . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 143px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/THgSjFkJtTI/AAAAAAAAAD8/QrRxIBiVylI/s200/Harvest.bmp" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510174538086331698" />
Today, amidst all of the hubbub of work, I've been contemplating life. No, I haven't figured out the deeper meaning of life (well, I have, but am not ready to share it just yet). I mean that I've been considering hard work and friends and life and basic concepts like that.

This has been a long week. It has been a tough week. Work has been like a roller coaster - one moment it is calm and quiet and the next moment all hell is breaking loose. Home has been my haven and for that I am grateful. Sweetpea and I are living together now and it is wonderful. We've had a week with some bumps but, overall, it has been good. We have been able to spend some time together talking and creating.

With that feeling of sharing and enjoying the fruit of our week's work, we are going out tonight. Bunny is joining us at a local tea house. Bunny is learning to knit and is doing a great job. Sweet Pea has been knitting for a year and a half and is great at it. We are going to enjoy the ambiance of the tea house, each other's company and the tea.

I know that there will be periods of time where we are just listening to the music and are caught up in our creative pursuits. We will be breathing more easily, relaxing in the energy of the space and having a great time being calm and quiet.

Part of the meaning of life is to know that while we work for and with others, it is important to also do some of what we want. Tonight, we will be doing just that. We will be, mostly, enjoying the fruits of our harvests this week. We've been working hard and are going to relax. We've been working for other and tonight we'll be doing what we want to do. It will be good.

Happy Harvest.

The one in which I consider world domination . . .

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 196px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/THaVLv6myBI/AAAAAAAAAD0/1Z9Du-Mrb8s/s200/knittingsoldier.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509755223207757842" />

I think by now we all know that global change happens incrementally and slowly. Just think about it . . . aspects of our 'green' movement began in the '70s with awareness of the ecology and the inception of Earth Day. Creation of workers rights began slowly with protests and then unions and then the creation of laws to support our workers. Civil rights was the same way. People fought their individual battles and then they started talking with each other and sharing their struggles. The media took it up, people organized and laws changed. Even with the legal foundation, there are still folks struggling for fair application of the the rights that we all deserve.

Please understand that I am not equating knitting with the struggle for racial or gender equality or for pay equity or for any of those things that I consider consider struggles for basic human rights. I recognize that I am over-simplifying those intense struggles. Instead, I use them as examples as I propose a more subtle point of view.

We live in a world that is harsh and intense. Our world is fast-paced; it is hard. In order to manage our existance and to get through life with poise, grace and joy, I believe that we each need to find space, time and activities that brings us peace, that make us happy and that help us to be calm and joyous. I believe that this is an important aspect to where we are going as a global society. People are talking about all of these changes that will happen in 2012 - well, I believe those changes to be about an end to a way of life. It would be an end to the erratic, fast-paced, economy-centric world as we know it. I believe that we are moving toward a calmer, more creative way of living.

For many, creative pursuits help us manage stress. They often allow us to slow down and be more calm. Creative pursuits help us to access parts of our brain (right) that we don't use as often as we could. They can help us express ourselves and work through issues. Creative outlets can help us manage our pain and express our joy.

Okay - that's the foundation for what I am proposing. My proposal - well, basically, I believe we should take over the world one knitter at a time. Yep, that's it. Let's aim for world domination!!!

I don't really think that we all need to be knitters or even that we have to work with fiber (although I am partial to fiber work). I chose knitting because I love it and it is an example of a creative outlet. To say "Let's take over the world, one creator at a time." sounds a bit strange so I choose to use "knitter". I submit that that we must (MUST!!) make time for creative outlets and actually pursue them. They must become a priority. Our priorities should be food, shelter, clothing and creation. Of course, good health and family are in there.

I am just saying that I am tired of folks saying "I don't have time for knitting because . . . (insert excuse)." Those of us who knit (or crochet or needlepoint or draw or write) know that it can find its way into the oddest times and spaces. Some of us knit when we are standing in line or are stopped in traffic. Some of us knit when we are waiting for the film to start at the theater. Others knit in bed or at lunch at work or school. Many of us create when we cannot sleep or first thing inthe morning in order to wake up. Drawing or writing or crochet or whatever can be the same way. If you cannot lug around your loom or your easel then plan your projects when you are away from your tools. You don't have to carry around your clay or the chisel you use to sculpt those behemoth statues; you can, instead, carry around your sketch book. You can plan the jewelry that you'll make when you get home. It can be done.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 149px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/THaVFqvJGQI/AAAAAAAAADs/Y7yZifb7pio/s200/Knitting+soldiers.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509755118738282754" /> Okay, that's it. That's what I propose. We should take over. Train other knitters! Wear the uniform (which will be handmade and fabulous, of course)! It is time for us to talk and walk the talk. Let's take over the world. It's time.

The one in which I buy (or windowshop) local . . .

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 51px; height: 128px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/THWBCKcwXYI/AAAAAAAAADc/eVr2LHyZees/s200/yarn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509451593322356098" />
You know . . . there is a movement to "buy local". I think this is a great idea and I am examining my shopping and spending (yes, they are different) patterns to see where I can increase my support of the local economy.

I think the movement is called "3/50", although my memory might be lapsed. The concept is to shop at 3 (or more) local stores and spend at least $50. That is at least $50 total, not at each store. That's not too hard to do, really.

We've taken to shopping a bit more at local markets. Sure, we still go to some of the warehouse stores, but we are trying to buy produce and other items more locally. I'd love to buy all organic but right not, it won't work in the budget so we do it where we can.

I am looking for a local, independent book store. There used to be one in Royal Oak but it is long gone. I can (and do) buy used at John King books. I love that place (both locations). Although I love books also, I buy more than that.

That gets me to my real idea of shopping, yarn stores! I buy little, if anything, at the big chain stores. Firstly, they have very little that I want. Unless I am making something for someone who won't appreciate finer fibers or something that needs to be indestructable (acrylic and hard-wearing), I shop at the independent stores. I go to Ewe-Nique Knits in Royal Oak, MI as much as possible. If I am unable to make it there, I go to . . . have you any wool? in Berkley, MI. When I am working at the local base, I shop at Crafty Lady Trio in Sterling Heights/Utica area. I do my best to spread my money around to other shops as well.

Lo and behold, I find out that I am going to be spreading my money a little thinner. There is a new (or newer) yarn shop in Clawson, MI and it isn't that far from me. It is PK Yarn Over Knit and is close by. I am hoping to get there soon. Who knows what I'll find that I 'need'? Okay, maybe I won't 'need' anything, but I can look, can't I?

Don't judge my shopping habits (or my yarn stash)!! Just buy local!

The one in which I'd like to party like it's 1599!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 100px; height: 75px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TG6sF9V-gzI/AAAAAAAAADU/wWIc3AHNQdQ/s200/merenn.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5507528612686758706" />
Hail all!

I am headed to the Bristol Rennaissance Festival today. Yep, it's a bit of a drive but we are going to see some wonderful friends and have a great time.

I've spent the last few days wondering what to wear. Every year I have this vague idea (or plan or concept) that I will make new festival garb outside of the festival season. Does it happen? Of course not! Do I do things at the last minute? Of course I do! I suppose that the vendors count on people like me, don't they?

I did get some mending completed. It wasn't my mending but I got it done. I also threw together a pair of upper arm cuffs. If they work, I'll post photos. If they don't, then forget this was ever mentioned and we'll never see the photos. I spent some time last night trying to put an outfit together and therein lies another issue.

I've got to get my festival clothing organized. I was running amongst the various closets, dressers and storage bins. I still cannot find everything but I've got enough for a decent faire outfit. Of course, I've been chanting the resolution about getting organized for days. We'll see what happens for next year.

I am, also, getting together a couple of knitting projects to take along. I've got a few hours in the car with my girl and plenty of time to knit. Also, we are meeting up with some dear friends tomorrow. One is a knitter so we'll have some time to revel in the various completed projects.

I do plan on looking for some neat hand-made goodies at the Faire. We'll see what I can find.

Until then . . .

The one in which I try to see the future. . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 86px; height: 145px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/TGxo8-_mkwI/AAAAAAAAADM/dnZDZf_KqCA/s200/crystal+ball+waterhouse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506891841278481154" />
Yep, it's that time again . . . it seems that I update annually now. Cripes, time does fly. Who knew? Well, I sure should have.

Loads of stuff has changed and much of it has stayed the same. I've divorced, I've moved, I've found love again. I've sewn, I've knitted, I've done nothing.

Right now, I am trying to work on unfinished objects (UFOs). It's like other aspects of my life. I'm trying to bring some old issues to closure before I being new parts of of my life. Anyway, last week, while I was sick, I finished a triangular shawl for myself. It is a simple shawl with random eyelet rows amidst the garter stitch. It is knit from Yarn Hollow (www.yarnhollow.com) yarns and it is the yarns that are fascinating about the project.

For my lightweight knitting (something I can carry around outside the house), I am working on my Frog socks. These are a generic pair of socks made from SWTC's soy-based chitin yarn. They are in green with a bit of gray and white. The green runs from a soft spring green to poisoned apple green. They are a 2x2 rib on the leg and a rib/stocking stitch combo on the foot.

For the heavyweight knitting (something that stays home and required concentration), I am knitting or rather trying to knit on Betty's afghan. This is a project for my BFF's mother. Betty is 92 this year and I need to get it done. I may have written of it before (there aren't so many entries - I suppose I could look). Betty has done an afghan for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This is the last and she cannot do it anymore. I received 1 (of an eventual 9) panel, partially finished. The pattern was typed on a manual typewriter on a slip of a piece of paper. It had a name akin go to "Marquise Afghan". Of course, I've lost the pattern. I've got to try to 'read' my knitting to figure it out. I think it is the Feather and Fan stitch - at least, that looks good so far. I made all the panels and when I was piecing it for final assembly, I realized that the original panel was too short. Even though I'd added to it, it was still too short. Sigh. So, I only need to add to that (without the pattern) and assemble it.

I am not sure what I'll do after this; who knows what the future brings. I am itching to start something new but I am so enjoying cleaning up projects. I do believe the next UFO-to-FO stop on this journey will be the sweater for Thomas. Thomas was born in March; I've still got time.

Blessings to all.

Dianne

The One in which I must decide

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/SitpBlXsHnI/AAAAAAAAADE/4cNjgb884Kw/s200/2007_0916Image0073.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5344480858737483378" />

Well, I am off camping in a few days. Yepper, the city girl goes country for a bit every year. I head off into the great wild woods or vally or hills or wherever and get my nature groove on. I will spend 12 days enjoying the sounds, smells and sweet air of our Earth.

This year I am headed to the Pagan Spirit Gathering again. For years, it has been in Ohio but, this year it moves to Camp Zoe, MO. I will be enjoying the space with friends. Bunny, Sweetpea and I are camping together. It is the first year in quite a while that I've camped with others. That will sure be fun.

We've got loads of coordinating and packing to do. Who brings what for whom is a big set of questions. Mostly, we are working it out, though. My toughest decision isn't about my clothing or the books but, you guessed it, about my knitting. What projects do I bring??? Yep - projects, not project! I realize that it is a plural reference.

In years past, I haven't done much knitting. One year, I took a lovely skein of sock yarnn to knit. I even worked on the socks but I didn't get far. The yarn, you see, wasn't superwash and it was felting as I knit it in the 90 degree weather. Another year, I had the good sense to bring different yarn but it was fuzzy. Fuzzy and humidity/heat don't mix well. Sigh.

This year I have a multiple-pronged plan. I am taking a sock project. It is a simple set (I am an optimist) of socks in Tofutsies yarn. That might be good to knit. The second project is the Victoria parasol project. No wool or animal fiber to be found in that project. But, I worry it is too complex for those lazy hot days. The last project is going to be some wash cloths from Lily Sugar'n'Cream. One cannot go wrong with basic cotton. That'll be for the days when the sun or the heat addle my brain but my hands must still create.

So, here's to the great outdoors and to knitting in nature!!!

The one in which I am content . . .

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/SiiIROHs2cI/AAAAAAAAAC8/zjTcTVeLwnE/s200/May+09+148.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5343670787304643010" />

Life is going well. I’ve got a plan and I am working that plan. Sure, there are glitches but, mostly, it is all working out. On Sunday, I expected to spend time mending and packing (for camping) and sputtering around the house. Instead, I spent yesterday in the ER with my friend, Gardenia. “They” thought she might have the H1N1 virus so our visit there was spent in isolation from the madding crowd and wearing masks to prevent contamination (or further exposure).

It was an interesting visit to the hospital. We would watch as administrators and health care professionals would walk up to the door, look in, look down at their records and then walk away only to show up a few minutes later, masked, and ready to work. This was bad for said friend because she felt like something the cat dragged in (and if you’d seen her cat, you’d know that wasn’t a good thing). Poor Gardenia was feeling miserable and isolated and just wanted to be home in her own bed. I felt bad for her. But ...

The visit was good for me because I’d had the presence of mind to take along some knitting. There I sat for 6+ hours as they poked and prodded Gardenia. Poor woman, she was coughing, she looked tired and drawn, she was dehydrated, etc. But, there I sat being the good and stoic friend just a knitting away! It was a joy to be knitting and so relaxed . . . well that was me anyway – not so for poor Gardenia. After all of that, they release her with the diagnosis of a ‘cough’. Saying that they’d run out of Swine Flu testing kits and weren’t likely to get more. They advised her to watch her symptoms and advised the rest of us to stay masked when around her. Go figure!!!

The photo above is an early photo of the socks I started on may 29th. They are in Tofutsies in a green/gray combo colorway (I think it is called Four Leaf Toever). It is a simple 2x2 rib on the leg of the sock. I don't know yet what the foot will look like as I am doing this from memory. No, I am not being innovative - I just cannot find the pattern in my craft room. Sigh.

It's been forever!!!

Cripes! It HAS been forever, or very nearly, since I've written anything here. A dear friend, Sweetpea, nudged me today and, albeit slowly, I got the hint. My excuse . . . sure, I've got plenty of them! I've been in school; I've been busy; yada, yada, yada. None of them are any good though. It just has been a long time since I've even considered writing. I haven't even been to Ravelry.com in a great while. It took teaching Sweetpea to knit to get me back to this place and to this mindset.

See, Sweetpea has picked up knitting very, very quickly. In fact, she is a sponge for it. Remember when you were there??? I sure remember that time! She's discovering fibers and patterns and techniques. It is such a joy to see it, to experience it, through her eyes - or, through her hands, if you will. Her enthusiasm for the craft has reignited my creativity. I just love it when that happens!!!

Another friend, my BFF - Amethyst, and I were chatting last night about Sweetpea and her knitting. A few years ago, I taught Amethyst to knit and she really took to it. She was patient with my teaching and practiced like crazy. She had a handicap with me as her teacher. She is a lefty and I am a righty ... that made the process very interesting. Anyway, since then, Amethyst knits alot and she knits lace. She loves it and she is good at it. When she needs a break from other knitting, she knits lace. Me - I am a sock knitter. I knit loads of stuff but always go back to socks. I've got 2 pair of socks on the needles right now. One is a simple pair and the other takes concentration. Gotta have different projects for different moods, right?

But, I digress, back to Sweetpea. Amethyst and I were wondering what Sweetpea's main knitting will be. Will she knit sweaters? Will she knit household items? It will be such fun watching her grow into her knitting-hood.

Not only is this craft of knitting productive and useful, it is joyful. It brings people together. It is expressive and satisfying and, it was missed while I was in school. Today, a group of friends in Chicago are gathering to knit and enjoy each other's company. I wish I were there. It has been forever since I've really sat and knit. I will go do that now. I will think of my friends and I will knit.

The one in which I am back on track

So, here I am - working on this sock and trying to avoid SSS (Second Sock Syndrome). We know that SSS can be fatal (to a pair of socks) as it prematurely splits the socks so that a matched pair (such as they are) is unattainable. So, so sad. . .

Anyway, I thought I'd be there on the Bellatrix pair. When we last visited the pair, the 2nd sock had progressed to the heel flap only to be stymied by a mistake in the pattern (well, really, in the pattern reading by the knitter). Undaunted and unstoppable (after a only a day or two pause in the knitting), the 2nd sock is on its way again. I've made the decision to go with the same heel flap stitch pattern as on the 1st sock (it is nice to have a pair that matches anyhow). The heel flap will be this lovely sl1, k across configuration.

As of a few minutes ago, the heel flap is finished, the edge stitches picked up, the gusset knit and decreased and the body of the foot has been started. We (me and the sock) are in to the stockinette (appropriate, no?) stitches on the sole of the foot and the pattern stitches on the instep. Now, it we are inches away (okay, many inches away as I wear size 9.5 shoes) from having a pair (yes, a PAIR) of socks!!! Now, what to knit next?

The one in which I slept

I have been having such trouble with my body clock. My original night owl has been spreading her wings and staying up until all hours of the night. I go back to school on Monday, January 5th, 2009 and I am worried about how I am going to make it through the days staying awake. Hopefully, once I am back in the swing of things, I'll keep more regular hours.

Today, I got up earlier than usual (9 a.m.) and rushed to lunch with a friend and then to Circle. Today is Twelveth Night and we were celebrating. This is the time to divine into the future; to use oracles and tarot cards and whatever other divination tools are useful to gain, hopefully, insights into the near future path. We were fortunate enough to be able to use a spirit board and tarot cards to garner some insights and advice for 2009.

Anyhow, I got home and just collapsed. I went upstairs to check email around 6:30 p.m. and change clothing. I remember crawling into bed to get warm and then I woke up at 11:30 p.m. It is 1:30 a.m. and I am headed back to bed. Must be that I need the rest. Maybe the looking into the future took the steam out of me in the present. Well, it is off to snooze land. Dreams await.

The one in which I learn humility

Okay, okay. . . I'll admit it. I was getting a bit smug. I'd started the 2nd Bellatrix sock and was just speeding through them. Once memorized (and that's easy) the pattern was a breeze. It was time to start the heel flap and I was feeling good. The 1st sock had been sitting for a few months and I wanted to get them finished. After all, what is more comfy than handknit socks? And, in a Michigan winter, what is warmer? Also, I've been studying like crazy and it was high time that the right side of my brain gave the left side a break and did a little creating.

So, anyway, the knitting is feeling great and the leg of the sock was finished. It was late in the evening but I was on a roll and didn't feel like putting the needles down in favor of sleep so I began the heel flap. I readied the sock and dove right in. That night, I did 22 rows of the 24 required. I was feeling good. The heel flap was tight but it looked good and I thought it would be good and strong. See?

Not too bad, right? Well, that's what I thought until I sat down to knit again tonight. I thought I'd just breeze through it and turn the heel. First, though, I wanted to see the pair of socks together so I pulled out sock #1 in order to see the beauty of my work. There I was, being all smug again. I sat for a few moments and just stared at sock #1. Doggone it!!! The heel flaps didn't match. See? Here is heel flap #1. It is pretty but they just aren't the same.

Heel flap #2 (the first one shown) looks ribbed whereas #1 does not. What the heck??!?!?!? So, what did I do (other than get a little cocky)? I picked up the pattern and there it was, in the instructions. "Rw 1: Sl 1 purlwise, k1 to end. Rw 2: Sl1 purlwise, p to end." I read them and reread them. Cripes! I'd done the heel flaps differently. On #1, I sl1 and then knit to the end, turned, sl1 and purled to the end. Sock #2 was sl1, k1 then sl1, p1 - alternating stitches throughout each row. Double cripes!!!

It was time to figure this out, obviously. I didn't want to frog all 22 rows but I couldn't wear socks with different heel flaps. Well, I could and no one would notice - but I would know. I wasn't sure what to do so, I went to Ravelry (of course!). I searched under "Bellatrix socks" and found more than 400 offerings to view. I began to look and felt comfortable that heel flap #1 was correct. That felt good, although it meant ripping back 22 rows (albeit short rows). Then, after several examples of Bellatrixes (Bellatrixi?), I began to see alternative heel flaps. Some folks used the sock #1 method and others had used sock #2 method. Triple cripes!!! Now what? It was time for a decision. Of course, I wasn't going to change sock #1 so that meant that I could rip back or mismatch. Cripes again!!! It was time to go afroggin'. :-(

I spent a good hour or more (interrupted with dinner, Dexter episodes and doggie/kitty petting) to get back to the beginning of the heel flap on sock #2. I want to knit more now but just don't have the energy or the confidence. Tomorrow evening, I'll get back to it. My lesson here is to be more humble, to remember to read the pattern through (and ask questions) before going off with my needles half-cocked. Now, on to rest for heel flap version 2.5.

Bright blessings to all.

Boy does time fly!!!

Cripes, time just blows by. Like so many, I never believed adults (when I wasn't one) that time races as one ages. I cannot believe that I haven't posted since March but, it must be true. I wonder if I just post during the darker times of year - when I tend to be closer to the computer. Or, i just get lazy. Chances are it is the latter of those options.

I am in a master's program now and have and excuse, sort of. Even so, I am on winter break and am supposed to be working on my master's thesis and, instead, I am doing this. I am listening to the Limenviolet podcast and knitting on Bellatrix sock #2 (finally!!!) and felt the urge to document some of this. Go figure!

I actually should be gathering up Yule gifts to mail out tomorrow. I've got to run to the post office or to UPS to get them into the transport system. But, first, I've got to wrap the gifts. Then I have to make the decision about USPS or UPS. Husband (the mail carrier) or brother (the UPS exec) both appreciate the business. Maybe I'll split up the packages when I post them. Tomorrow will tell.

We've got 10 or so inches of snow in the metro Detroit area. It is beautiful and so, so cold!!! We are s'posed to get more snow tonight. I guess that means more knitting time (to stay warm and all!!).

Okay - I am off to help a friend move homes (yes, it is December and icy and still, life goes on!).

Happy Winter Solstice to all!!

To FO or to UFO

Cripes, time sure flies. There are a few aspects of winter that I love and one that I really don't like. It is the general lack of light that gets to me. I have to watch myself and make sure that I don't fall into a pit (or THE pit) of lethargy.

In order to combat the winter doldrums, this year I vowed to work on my UFOs. Since the beginning of the calendar year, I've done pretty well. I've finished the Marquise Gauntlets in Blue Moon Fiber Arts Raven series Ravenscroft mediumweight yarn. I love these and loved working on them.

Additionally, I knit away on these "Gwen" socks. They are a Momma Monkey pattern from Gigi Silva. They were heartwarming to knit as Gigi passed away earlier this year and I was able to meditate on her and her generosity as I knit them. Also, they are for my sister who has had some health issues. I added prayers for her as I knit them.

Now, I am working on finishing an afghan that a former knitter asked me to complete. Normally, I wouldn't so such a thing but, it is for Mary's mom, Betty. Betty turns 90 this year. She's knit one of these afghans for each of her children, grandchildren and, all but one of her great-grandchildren. She started this one and her arthritis got the best of her. She asked Mary to ask me to finish it. Last July, I received a box o'yarn in the mail. It was loaded with skeins of dark plum Red Heart acrylic, the instructions (typewritten) and the panel that Betty had started. I've been stalling on working on it because I had trouble getting a gauge to match Betty's piece and because I am not fond of the yarn. Now that I am working on cleaning up the UFO pile, it is being worked. We'll see how long it lasts.

On to better things . . . it is 'trash night' after all.

Frog Sunday

Well, today is Superbowl Sunday . . . okay - the game is on somewhere in the house but I am sure not watching it. Even if I did watch it, I'd be watching for the commercials and not so much for the game itself. Instead, I had a lie in today and a lovely day of puttering.

I've done a couple of loads of laundry and I began straightening and cleaning my Atelier (I think this means studio). In the studio room I had piles of clothing for mending, yarn, patterns, sweaters for recycling, etc. etc. Now, I can see the floor and find yarns and such! Woohoo!!! Now, it is 9:45 p.m. and I haven't knit a stitch - but, there is still a little time for that.

A while back, I found some lovely natural fiber sweaters at various thrift shops. My plan was to deconstruct them and reuse the yarn. There were about 10 or 12 pieces of angora and a few of lambs wool, others were all wool of varying colors and qualities. the sweaters were good brands - Talbots, Abercrombie and Fitch, and others. I still like the idea but changed my mine for this batch of sweaters. These will go to the local homeless shelter. It has been in the single digits at night and in teens during the day. Yorble gathers up things the shelter needs and in watching this - I decided the sweaters would be going there as well. I can afford yarn. Although the idea of recycling is great - the reuse is more important here. They are going to a good home.

Okay - after that decision was made and those sweaters were set aside, I found several UFOs that needed attending to soon. One was the start of a pet cosie for the Royal Oak Animal Shelter. It was knitted of 2 yarns combined - one eyelash and another poly worsted, both in shade of red. I'd run out of the eyelash and was debating finishing the blanket just inthe worsted so I tried it. It just didn't look right. I even tried rationalizing that it was just for some kitty or puppy who'd be adopted and the animal wouldn't care what it looked like. But, the sensibilities took over and helped me realize it did matter and I frogged the darn thing. The yarn is now destined for a hat and scarf for the homeless shelter. I have and will make other pet cosies - but, not with the red yarn.

Another frog incident was with some elann.com Peruvian Highland Wool. I had been knitting fingerless gloves for my sister. These were simple with a single large cable up the arm. In looking at them - I realized the gauge was off and they were just too long and chunky (from my knitting, not the yarn). Sister wouldn't wear them. She is always cold and deserves something lovely and wearable - so, they got frogged. The yarn is a coppery color and will probably be reknit into fingerless mitts for her but in proper gauge!

So, there it is. I am now headed to knit on another UFO - the Gwen socks from Simply Shetland - also for Sister. Yea!!!

Returned home . . .

Well, I am back. I've been back for a few days. I spent a week in Florida and didn't see much sun. I was in St. Pete's and it was beautiful and warm, by Michigan standards, but we didn't get outside much. I was in a Leadership Development program that was amazing - but, it was inside.

I did take knitting along and got a bit done. I worked on the Marquis Gauntlets and the Noro Striped Scarf - a bit - here and there.

I didn't bring back any souveniers at all. I didn't have a rental car so I was limited to what what within walking distance. There were some wonderful restaurants and touristy places but no fiber fanatic help. I heard about a lovely shop but it was 7 miles away. While I was walking quite a bit - it was just too far.

Today, I finished the Marquis Gauntlets from elann.com. They are wonderful and, of course, photos will follow. Now, of course again, I want to start something new but, I won't. I am dedicated to working on UFOs and I must do that. I will work on the Noro Striped Scarf next. I do plan to do a beret to match - yikes! that would be new! I won't be buying any new yarn, though - so, I think that it still counts towards UFO completion.

Now, to knit.

Travel Souveniers

Well, I am, once again, on a yarn diet. Okay - not really a diet but a life style change. I may still buy yarn but, I won't use it right away. As I may have mentioned, I am trying to finish some UFOs this year. I want to get some projects done so that I can start new with a clear conscience.

Part of this is so that I can knit more for myself. It seems that I end up knitting so much for others that I don't get my projects done. So, I am going to try to avoid taking knitting requests this year. If I knit for others, it will be with Yule gifts in mind.

What does this have to do with travel, you ask? I can understand your confusion so I will explain. Because I am trying to use what I have and to pare down my projects, I probably won't be buying so much yarn that doesn't get knit right away. It seems that I use the purchase of fiber to help to fill my creative urges. When I don't have time to knit (or weave or sew), I buy materials instead. So, I am thinking that if I am actually knitting(or weaving or sewing), then the urges will be sated and I won't need to buy as much. Makes sense, right? Okay - follow me here . . . more knitting and less buying means I don't get to yarn stores much because I'll have less reason to go to my LYS. I won't get to see the new stuff and fondle the new fibers.

But, I travel for work and for play. When I travel, I like to bring back trinkets to remind me of where I was and when. Well, who needs another seashell toilet paper cover or a set of 50 state spoons? My plan is to visit local yarn stores in my travel destinations. I may, if the urge strikes, buy yarn from those foreign LYSs. But, because I will be travelling, I won't be adding to my stash. Oh, no!! Instead, I will be gathering souveniers from my travels. See? I knew you'd get it.

By the way, I am headed to Florida in a couple of weeks. I am traveling for work, really!!

The Knitting Resolution

Well, well, well . . . another new year and the potential for more New Year's Resolutions. Yes, I could vow to do more blog posts. True, I could vow to be more organized. Right enough that I could manage my time better. All grand and potential resolutions but they aren't practical. I find that if I set my plans for such lofty ideals, I won't meet them. Then, I'll self-judge, disappoint myself and just fall off into an abyss of recrimination.

Okay, okay - it wouldn't be that bad - but, why set myself up for the possibility.
Instead, I am going to try to do something a bit different. I am going to participate in the Finishapalooza 2008 mentioned by Miss Violet (and others) of Lime and Violet fame. It has also come up on Ravelry.

So, I am going to try to avoid beginning new project and, rather, will strive to finish existing projects. We'll see how it goes. I've got a good number of them started and would like to see some results. I do have an Annie Modesitt corset that isn't started. I believe that might be the big 2008 project. I'd like to do it for myself for October (the Witches Ball). It is a goal, anyway.

Til then. . . resolution knitting commences.

Bella's Got Her Groove Back

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8aQu_iYMu1s/R04mjLF8r0I/AAAAAAAAABU/FYredfM79Pc/s200/2007_0916Image0022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5138086610591330114" />
Finally, finally, I think I am ready to start knitting with some excitement and fervor again. I don't know what it was about November that got to me . . . but, I found it hard to pick up needles. Cripes, I found it hard to do much of anything at all except work. (Heavy Sigh!).

Anyway, today, I went to Old Village Yarn Shop (in Plymouth, MI) and searched for some wool to knit and felt. I am going to make a pouch for a friend of mine. It will be similar to the photo here. These are made to go onto a belt or a cord around the waist. I found some Galway wool from Plymouth Yarn Co (but the company isn't in Plymouth, MI) and a lovely hand-made leaf-shaped button for the closure. I think I will try to create an I-cord Celtic knot pattern on it. The idea is to attach the cord before felting and let the cord felt along with the pouch. If I can pull it off, the knot will be part of the pouch closure as well.

So, I plan to start this tomorrow . . . I am just too tired tonight. Hopefully, I can finish out November with more knitting zeal that I've had lately. Other things have weighed upon me lately and rather than 'knitting through them', which I know works . . . I've been just sitting and stewing. Enough, I say! Enough!!! :-)

Winter slow-down

I have been remiss in knitting and keeping track of my knitting. I've been doing a bit - but nothing noteworthy. It seems that, since Samhain, I've been just treading water. Sigh.

I've been knitting pet cozies for the local animal shelter (photos to follow later). They are simple and couldn't be more basic. I knit a rectangle or a square of some sort of bulky acrylic yarn from my stash. I try to make them squishy and soft so that a little puppy or kitty or big ones, for that matter, will get some comfort while in the cages at the shelter.

Beyond that, I've been in a mild, passive panic about the holidays. I'd swear that all year long I had these great ideas but didn't start any of them. Of course, I was assuming I had loads of time. Now, I've got a month (in some cases, less) and cannot execute these ideas (though, I'd like to shoot myself sometimes for getting into these pickles).

I've spent the last couple of days working on realistic ideas for friends and family. Fortunately, the list isn't big but much of it is meant to be handmade.

Next year, I am not making anything for anyone unless it is in preparation for Yule!!!

Charity Knitting

Wow! I am so far behind. I haven't updated much here or on Ravelry lately. Things will open up after Samhain, to be sure. This is a very busy time of year.

Anyway, on Friday, after work, I attended a charity knitting gathering at my LYS. Ewe-Nique Knits stayed open for the gathering. The knitting was in support of the Royal Oak Animal Shelter. We gathered to knit pet snuggles. The idea is to knit smaller afghans or blankets for the cats and dogs in the shelter. These help to make their cages a bit more comfortable and the blankets go home with them when the animal is adopted. Additionally, we were encouraged to bring pet food that would be donated to the shelter.

Hubby did a Costco run the day before and brought home an extra case of Friskies canned cat food so that was our donation. I grabbed some stash yarn (some unknown acrylic chenille) and knit away. I finished a cat crate-sized blanket that night. It is 2 strands of this bulky chenille in very rich purple.

This event happens monthly on the last Friday of every month. It is so worth it. This is especially close for me as all of our pets are rescues. Now, before I go on, I must admit that I cannot remember which podcast (though I will post it when I can) I was listening to at that time. I diligently made a note of it, of the podcaster's name and of her website. Do you think I can find the note? Not a chance. Podcasts are my new traveling 'music'. I listen to them on the way to work, walking from the car to the building, while at lunch, on the way home, etc. etc. But, I digress.

Anyway, she (this podcaster) referred to herself as a 'Yarn Pimp' and I thought "that's me, too!" I've been accused of being an enabler (thanks to my BFF) but no one has called me a pimp, no one but me, that is. I'll admit to it; I'll own it. I don't actually think I do it out loud. You won't find me wearing a felted fedora with a long feather trying to sell yarns to other folks in some dark alley just looking for my cut of the take. No, I do it to myself! There, I've said it.

I've gone into my LYS (Ewe-Nique Knits) and into other stores and looked at yarns but didn't buy. I've done it on-line, during the day, when looking at indy dyers and spinners and I don't buy. Sure, I put up a good front. I seem to be in control and respectable. I hear some saying "look how restrained she is -she isn't buying yarn." That's me, restrained!

Then, I get home after a stressful day at work and I start to browse. Oh, I might be looking at yarn store sites or, I might be reading blogs. I read about knitters buying these amazing color-ways in skeins with fantastic yardage and my resolve starts to waiver. I even move away from the computer to try to do something else around the house and I keep getting called back. I hear that voice, that quiet sultry voice saying "look at this, ain't this nice? That skein of from etsy.com is just what you're looking for? Come on! Just for you, this yarn will treat you good!!!"

Arghghghghgh! I cannot stand it! I go to the 'puter, type in the URL and buy! Will it end? Will I ever have stash control? Will I ever be able to stand up to my inner yarn pimp???

Hi, I am Dianne and I'm a Yarn Pimp. I've gone 14 days without a yarn purchase (pre-purchased yarn clubs don't count!!).

Yarn for food . . .

Okay, I just came back from the doctor a bit ago. On my way back, I was going to stop at the yarn store near the doc's office. This is a quaint little store with loads of sock yarn (my current fave!). I held firm (being on a food diet and a yarn diet at the same time) and drove past. That took great willpower!

Now, I am seeing this doc about my weight. That is to say, I want to lose the weight. I am not approaching this in a common fashion because those methods haven't worked. I've done Weight Watchers, Eat Right 4 Your Type, Atkins, etc., etc. and just couldn't crack the code. This time, though, it is working. We are approaching the weight loss in the most wholistic fashion that I've ever done. We are looking at the physical, mental and emotional sides of things. Without going into the long and boring details, I've lost 33 pounds since Feb, 2007. Sure, it might not seem like a lot - but, for me, it is a breakthrough!!!

Anyway, I realized that part of why this is working is that I am shifting my reward system away from food. It wasn't all that long ago when I'd complete some project (aroudn the house) or some task and I'd reward myself with chips or icecream or some such thing that didn't help my health. Today, as I was driving by the yarn store, I realized that I was offering myself a fibery reward. This is a much healthier way to approach life, I think.

I am going to set these little goals for myself. If I can get off 5 more pounds next month, I'll buy Stephanie Japel's Fitted Knits. More weight after that might mean more sock yarn, who knows? Anyway, it feels good.

Just one more row, please, just one more.

Well, since finishing the Fraternal socks, I've been going in circles about what to knit. Over the past few weeks, I've purchased several skeins of various amazing sock yarns in preparation for being able to start a new project. I've been digging through patterns, scouring the internet and even wondering if I could create my own sock pattern (No! I am not there ... yet!). All of this was in anticipation of finishing the Fraternal socks and being able to start something new.

Well, as we know, the Fraternal socks were born last week. So, what have I been doing with my time? I just don't know. Somehow, when I looked at the chocolate, vanilla and strawberry striped yarn that I'd purchased for the Carolyn, The Last Queen of Monaco socks by Momma Monkey, I just wasn't satisfied - rather, I wasn't excited with starting them. Okay, maybe it was because I was starting them in the evening and I wasn't in the mood to wind the loose skein into a center-pull ball. Maybe it was because I'd just finished a striped socks and I wasn't in the mood. Who the heck knows?

So, I looked to the Fawkes socks or the Bellatrix pattern, also by Momma Monkey. I was itching to do one of her patterns but not interested in something that made a bold statement like the reds of the Fawkes or the dropped stitches of the Bellatrix. Again, who knows?

Now, add to this a bit of a cold/fluey-type thing that has been going around the office. I picked it up last week and didn't get much at all done over the weekend. My mind was willing but my body was not cooperating. Either I was blowing my nose or sneezing or coughing up a bit of lung. None of those things are conducive to smooth knitting. Sigh.

On Saturday, I dragged myself out of bed and went to my LYS. Ewe-Nique Knits was busy; they usually are busy. That doesn't matter, though 'cuz Marilyn or Amy still take a moment to chat. Marilyn showed me the new Buffalo Gold fiber that they've stocked (and I cannot afford). She also showed me the socks that were on her needles; well, needle - she was knitting on her 'concert needle' - a single circular that she's been taking to concerts with her. Anyway, she was knitting with simply shetland which is a silk and lambswool blend. It is lovely. I fell for it.

I brought that yarn home - two lovely balls of a color called 'Notland'. It is a soft brown with flecks of black and a hint of beige. As I set those lovely bits of yarn on my studio table, I winced a bit. Ah, chagrin! I was ready with the yarn but, what pattern? Fortunately, it didn't take but a moment to work that out. During all my 'research' last week, I knew just what I wanted to knit. I wanted something with where the knit pattern would be the design element, not the color. I wanted something that would show off a nifty stitch and still be a lovely color. Well, I had it, again, Momma Monkey's pattern, this time the Gwen.

I let the yarn sit there for a day as I slept most of Sunday - no knitting for me. But, Monday was a Federal Holiday - Columbus Day for the Americans (Thanksgiving for Canadians). I would have some time. Woohoo! I admit, I didn't dive right in to the socks. I did a bit of laundry (6 loads) and some puttering (straightening, dishes, etc.). But, then, when all that was done, there was no stopping me!!! Knitting was my reward!

Wouldn't you know it? I'd had to toss my favorite machine-made brown socks due to holes - now what was I going to do??? As I cast on, I realized that I couldn't wear my new brown pants until I finished these socks. Okay, that's a bit of an extreme - but, its a good excuse to plug away - to spend inordinate amounts of time knitting. Aha! A juicy rationalization for mucho knitting!!!

The cast on went smoothly. I did a 2 needle, long-tail cast on. I was worried that the silk wouldn't be elastic enough with a regular cast on so I cast on over 2 of the DPNs that I was using (size 0). I finished the rib cuff in no time and started on the pattern. It is a straightforward 5-row, 5-stitch repeat that is easy to remember. It has a k3tog combination in there that can be tough on the fingers - but, it looks great - it almost looks like a cable. The leg of the sock (I am on the 4th pattern repeat) is even and showing off the stitch pattern brilliantly. Tonight, as I was finishing off the 3rd of the repeats, I was thinking that I could get my nightly ablutions (ironing, lunch-making, bathing) done in the morning. Well, though I wanted to, I knew I couldn't do that - I'd be too rushed in the a.m.. But, if I could do just 1 more row, I'd iron, or shower or something.

If I could do just 1 more row, I'd let the puppies in from outside and then I'd feed the kitties - just one more row. I swear the animals know when I am in the 'one more row' mode. The cats stop rubbing against me and just lean against me and wait. The pups stop pounding against the back door and just sit there, looking in expectantly. We all know - just one more row and we can move on. Honest, I'll write a blog entry - right after just one more row.

Woohoo!! A finished project!!

Okay, okay - I made it to Manhattan and back without checking out a single yarn shop (she hangs her head in shame and shuffles her feet). I did, though, accomplish a couple of things. Woohoo!! Watch out - I feel a rationalization coming on!

I got to see some amazing sweaters - hand-made and machine made - and they weren't all on skinny models; some were actually being worn outside. Being in the Big Apple, I was near the epicenter of fashion (phooey on Milan and Paris) and saw some wonderfy assymetrical designs. It was inspiring and it gives me a new view of "Vogue Knitting."

Besides that, I finished my red, yellow and purple striped socks. I've been working on these for 2 months. I finished the first in August while with Miss Alabama and Miss Missouri in Tennessee. I started the 2nd sock at a Detroit Tigers game, worked on it in Atlanta (while there for work) and finished it in New York City. That's one well-traveled pair of socks.

I am calling these my 'fraternal socks' since they aren't identical. Well, I don't think any hand knit socks are really identical - but, these are a bit off. I started the first sock from the inside of the skein and the 2nd sock from the outside. Consequently, the stripes go in different directions. I could say this was a design choice, but, alas, no - it was an error. It is, now, though, a design feature. ;-)

There, those are my excuses for not making it to any yarn stores while in NYC!! Maybe next time.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fatesthread.blogspot.com/2007/10/woohoo-finished-project.html' title='Woohoo!! Fawkes!!

Finally, finally, I found the right fiber to use to knitting the Fawkes socks. I've been hunting for the right fiber for a couple of months and there it was - almost handed to me.

I was reading the Yarn Harlot's blog the other day when she was chatting about knitting (of course!) and making socks. Well, she was really chatting about her book deadline but she was using the sock knitting to soothe her stress. She had an amazing photo of her version of Cookie A's Monkey socks from Knitty. The pattern is lovely but isn't one I want to do right now. What I want to do is those Fawkes socks from Momma-Monkey (is there a primate theme here?). I've been eyeing that pattern since July when it was published.

Hopefully, it is obvious to all Harry Potter fans that the Fawkes pattern is in honor of Headmaster Dumbledore's pet phoenix. I knew, from first seeing it, that I wanted to do the pattern is a mix of twilight sky colors. I envisioned a combination of that orangey-peachy-yellowy, persimmonny-pink, red that is part of the early night sky. You know the shades, they come on a clear night right before the cornflower and midnight blues take over. Well, it's good to know what you want but finding it is tough - especially when I had such a specific image in mind. I did come across some roving of the right colors and thought I could spin what I wanted. Then, sanity reigned and reminded me that spinning was good but I don't, yet, have that kind of control over my spinning to get the colorway I wanted. There was a greater chance that I'd end up with a yarn that looked like a squished tomato rather than the fabulous combination worthy of Dumbledore's phoenix. Sigh . . .

The search continued until I read the Harlot's blog posting yesterday. As usual, she linked to the pattern and to the fiber source. I held my breath as I clicked the link for the fiber and it took me to Knittlestick's site. I found the fiber; it is the "Sailor's Delight" colorway. See, it is even named after that twilight sky color combination. "Red sky at morning, sailors take warning, red sky at night, sailor's delight." My fingers were crossed when I clicked to see if there was any left. Aha!!! There was a single skein left; my heart skipped a beat.

Okay, okay - yes, I am on a yarn diet. Yes, I'd vowed to knit up some stash before buying more; but, but, but, it was the right colorway! And, and, and, there was only one! And, it had the right name. Can't you see the stars aligning for these socks?!? Okay - yes, I've got other things to knit and yes, time is at a premium - but, they will be beautiful socks!!!

So, there it is. I rationalized (being the Queen of Rationalization!) I bought the skein. Yes, I did. I admit it, I am Dianne and I am a fiber-holic!

All that being said, I also admit to a certain amount of satisfaction and a bit of chagrin (only a bit) when I read the comments on the Harlot's blog today. I was scanning them and saw someone's comment about the yarn. The commenter mentioned that the colorway was no longer available. It was me! I bought it! (I hang my head in shame while I smirk smugly!!!)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://fatesthread.blogspot.com/2007/09/squawks-fawkes.html' title='Squawks! On 9/9/07, the Detroit Tigers hosted what I think was their first Stitch 'n Pitch event. This event is sponsored by The National NeedleArts Association and was open to whomever wanted to attend. This 'movement' was started 4 years ago in Seattle. Seems that some crafty women in the Mariner's front office suggested marketing to knitters and crocheters as a way of getting folks into the ball park. Since then, it has spread to 25 of the 32 MLB teams (I may have the numbers a bit wrong).

The organization for the event was amazing. The local yarn and craft stores sold tickets for specific sections in the ballpark. We also received coupons for a gift bag with wonderful goodies donated by the local and some national vendors. The bag I received (perfect for toting more knitting) had several pairs of knitting needles, some patterns, some yarn samples, a scarf kit, a magazine or two and some coupons. During the event, you could hear some exclaiming about the contents of the bags while other people were bartering and trading for needles and yarns -as if they were trading cards! The goodies were nice enough that a person could start a project while at the park - just in case they'd forgotten their knitting (as if!). It was grand!!

I have no idea how many fiber artists, friends and family were there but it was easily 500 or more. There were knitters, crocheters, and embroiderers, from what I could see. Some folks had big, chunky work and others had very fine work. There were non-knitters/crafters and those just learning. You could tell who the more experienced were because they'd be huddled over someone elses work offering advice or oohing and aahing over the effort.

Every now and again, you'd hear the shout 'show me your bag' or 'that's a great sweater'. You just knew that someone's needlework was being admired.

Afterwards, Miss Alabama, Miss Missouri and I spoke of this event. They are absolute baseball fans. Me, not so much; well, I wasn't until that day. Anyway, we are talking about doing a round of SnPs next year. We could see the St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers play. For Alabama, I am not sure which MLB team we could see - but, heck, I am game to travel to a third.

I started a sock that day and am almost finished with it (see the photo above, same photo as 9/19). This is the 2nd sock in the pair, woohoo! Now, I think I have sock knitting down and can start doing it for other people.

I'd bet that the food vendors found their sales skewed a bit that day. After all, one can sip on a soda or eat a wrapped hot dog but don't get the cotton candy near the fuzzy yarn!

Seems that the Detroit Tigers have another fan and I've found another excuse to knit in public.
Life is good!!

Second Harvest

Well, today we celebrated the Autumnal Equinox. Our group gathered, celebrated and enjoyed the day recounting the gifts we've received this year. We talked of family, friends, spirituality, joy, health and so much more.

We also celebrated Bill the Obscure's birthday. He turned 50 and there was much celebration.

In addition to realizing what amazing friends and family I have, I've also been pondering the abundance in my fiber life. I've been, albeit slowly, loading books, fiber and projects into Ravelry. Last night, I saw that I've got over 40 books in my fibery library. These are the knitting books - there aren't any listings there for spinning, weaving or general fibery goodness! That's abundance! I sat back to examine this a bit and realized that i"ve been doing a bit of what I used to do when I was in law school. Then (and now) when I didn't have the time or energy to delve into a fiber project, I would buy something to help satisfy the need for creative flow. Sure, it didn't fill it completely but it helped. When in school, I'd surround myself with yarn or fabric and just feel the textures and take in the color. Now, I do a little of that, but I read about it more. I want to put a moratorium on books but I am not sure that will work. There are some wonderful books out there that I want for my library. Maybe I'll cull the collection and get rid of some of the books I do have. This will take a bit more pondering.

Here is a good example of knitted abundance. I made these cupcakes from the One Skein book. These were for when Miss Alabama, Miss Missouri and I met to have a stitch weekend. We were celebrating my birthday and none of us wanted cake so we had 'cupcakes' instead. I packaged them in mini-cake boxes - just for the fun of it. The photo reminds me about how good life really is and what amazing family and friends are in my life. Thanks!!

Time Flies!

I cannot quite believe it has been 2 weeks since the last post. It doesn't seem as if I've been doing very much - but, in retrospect, I have. I had to travel to Atlanta for work last week. Yep, that's right - I flew on 9/11. The airports were sure quiet. Our flight, on the other had, had a bit of excitement. Seems that some young men decided to be foolish and make jokes about bombs. Well, no one else found it funny and they were escorted from the flight (before we took off, fortunately) by state troopers. Sigh!

Anyway, while in Atlanta for work, I found Knitch. It is a lovely yarn and fiber shop not far from downtown. It took me less than 10 minutes from the Olympic Park area. The staff was helpful, the shop was lovely and they'd just opened a new dye kitchen that made me envious. I ended up buying a new spindle and some lovely merino silk blend for spinning. I also found out that the Yarn Harlot will be there this week (tonight, I think). I was a week too early!!! Sigh (again!)

The other thing that has been filling my time is Ravelry. I GOT MY INVITATION!! It came while I was out of town. I've spent a few hours here and there on it just exploring. What a gift this is!!! I am still trying to maneuver my way around (I am fatesthread on Ravelry) but am having loads of fun. These folks are amazing - the ones who thought it up and have exected it. I've got some techno challenges, as usual. I am 'graphically challenged' but it'll work out, I am sure.

On my needles: I am working on a 2nd sock of On-Line Superwash Sock yarn in bright colors; that's them above. I got to go to the Detroit Tigers Stitch 'n Pitch and started it there. I worked on it while traveling and am 2/3 of the way finished. I am already thinking of the next project so I must be close (at least psychologically) to finishing this one. I'll write more about the ball game another time.

Now, to bed to nurse this migraine.

So, I hope I am over the creative hump. I've reached out and purchased, I've started and restarted projects and I've talked to folks who I trust and respect and I think I've got a handle on this slump (or hump, or rut, or whatever).

I learned I am not alone in this. You can find blog entries, book chapters and conversations about writer's block and knitters block and all such. I just read an entry in "Stephanie Pearl-McPhee Casts Off" in which she mentions many UFOs.

At my LYS (Ewe-Nique Knits in Royal Oak), I spoke with one of the owners and she mentioned how changing techiniques would help her get past a block.

So, I found yarn and fiber on-line. I made my first Lime and Violet order. Also, I found some lovely sock yarn at Yarn Lust's site (she sent candy with the yarn so Yorble was happy). I ordered some new needles, bare wool and dye for here and to finish it off, I went, as mentioned to my local yarn store. At my LYS, I spoke with Marilyn, one of the owners. She helped me find a book I was looking for and let me vent for a bit. All of that seemed to do it. I felt as if I'd passed the test - I was ready to move on.

So, I (of course) cast on another project. This time it is a simple childs cap. It is Debby Ware's Gumdrop Cap. So, I am all set - now, to knit!!

UFOs

I am feeling a bit frustrated lately. I cannot seem to get a rhythm going on any project. I've got a number of UFOs going that I need to finish - this is from suffering 'finishitis' (or was it 'unfinishitis'?) Anyway, I need to finish a number of things and just cannot get to it.

Also, I've got some socks on the needles and I just cannot get into the swing of them. That is probably because they are a departure for me. I usually do socks as mindless knitting. These mystery socks are taking some concentration. I cannot do them and multitask. Sigh.

Hopefully, with this long weekend, I'll get over this hump.

WIPs

Just a short note about works in progress today. This is on my mind for a couple of reasons. I was reading the Yarn Harlot's blog about her unfinished objects (UFOs) and her various works in progress (WIP). As always, she is an interesting and amusing read.

Anyway, I am going camping this weekend and am trying to decide which project to take along. I will be the only knitter there so I don't want to take anything that is too complex (Mystery Sock) because it will take me away from the group. I also don't want to buy anything new because I am trying to finish several WIPs and use up a little bit of stash for whatever new projects I start.

I was going to take the 2nd self-striping sock (from On-Line yarn) but cannot. I only have 1 pair of Knit Picks metal double-pointed needles (DPNs) and cannot move them from the project they are in. Sigh.

One of the lessons here is that I need more knitting needles - there are never enough. Another is that I must keep a simple project going at all time!!!

A Valuable Resource

A while back, I stumbled across a useful website. If you go here you will find an index of, at latest count, more than 3000 yarns.

This may not seem like such a big deal but it can be extremely helpful. For example, if you are searching for the weight of a particular yarn, you can go here and search by brand. It will allow you to search by weight, and find comparable yarns. It was helpful to me when I came across a pattern that called for a discontinued yarn. I was able to go to Yarndex and find the discontinued yarn entry and other yarns of similar weights.

It was also a benefit when I couldn't find a particular yarn from a specific manufacturer. It was something that few retailers seemed to carry. Yarndex gave me the info and I was able to get something that worked for my pattern.

There are a few yarn entries that have the option for purchase. They are hyperlinked to the folks who own the site.

OTN: I still have Mama Monkey's Mystery Socks on my needles. I had to frog the first couple of rows of the leg pattern. I was frustrated and put it down for a couple of days. Now, I am still on the first pattern repeat but it is going well. For me, this combination of cable and a little lace-like knitting requires concentration. I've been knitting them at work, mostly, because at home I get a lapful of puppies and kitties. Sigh. I love those animals but need some space now and again.

Blogs, Journals, and 'My Diary'

Dear Diary,

I've never been good about keeping a journal. I always imposed too many rules on myself. You know . . . 'I'll write every day' or 'this journal is only for dreams (or school or love, or - insert subject)', etc.

It's always been amazing to me how people can 'journal' (when did that become a verb?) every day or blog about their lives. Well, I have a better clue now and it only took 50 years!!! Blogging or journaling is a great way of keeping track of life. It is a way of providing a bit of order sometimes, especially when life seems a bit chaotic. I find myself traveling through the day and, when something happens or a thought occurs, my response is "I want to write about that." This kind of adds a level of creativity, a dimension to activity that I didn't have before.

I've always been a strategic thinker. It is easier for me to see the big picture than the details. Because of this, the details often get lost. As it applies to knitting, weaving or another fiber activity, it is difficult to recreate something because I don't have the project record to refer to for the original piece. Another aspect of this is that I've stopped myself from doing things (dying fiber, particularly) because it seemed that it would be too much record-keeping and formulae - like Chemistry class (okay, I was procrastinating, but, for now we'll blame it on the lack of blogging). With this blog, it is all a bit more comfortable. I've been reading blogs for a bit and feel less A-B-Normal. So, we'll see how this goes . . .

Now, for the knitterly content: I've been listening to references to Soctopia.net and went to have a look. This woman (Mama Monkey) is amazing. She developed sock patterns based upon the Harry Potter characters for posting during July when the book and movie were released. And, as if these weren't fine enough, now she's got a 'mystery' sock pattern on the site. The theory of this is that you cast on and knit based upon her clues. You knit without knowing what the finished product will look like. There are 'mystery' stole projects out there but this is the first 'mystery' sock pattern I've seen. It is great because, for some, investing that kind of time, energy, and money into something like a shawl or a stole without knowing the potential outcome is a bit daunting. Not so with socks. Way cool!!!

Knitting Pretty

Okay, okay - I am a sucker for knitting books. I especially like pretty knitting books. Well, what I received from our dear postal carrier today just took my breath away. Two weeks ago I ordered a nice little book from Amazon.com. Lacy Little Knits by Iris Schreier is pleasant and fun but that wasn't the true treat of the deal. When I ordered it, there was a two-fer deal at Amazon. You know the drill, "buy that and get this one, and you'll get a price break." Well, I was feeling rich that day and on a whim ordered the pair of books. I was aiming to get the first book and just liked the title of the second. Anyway, it is the 2nd book that is truly the gem. The 2nd book (have I gone on enough yet) is Annie Modesitt's Romantic Hand Knits .

Now, let me explain the difference between these books. Iris's book is just fine. The projects are nice but they are a bit mundane for me. There is a pleasant selection of patterns but none that knocked my socks off (even if I was wearing sandals). The photography is run of the mill and tends to be of the front or of 1 side of the knitted piece. There are a few pieces that I liked but the sizing was too small. Okay, yes, I admit to being, ahem, ample

Ms. Modesitt's book, on the other hand, is spectacular. The designs are inspired and novel, beautifully executed and photographed. There are good photographs of the overall garment and of the detail - often of the back of the piece. Her patterns are written for a full range of sizes (Woohoo!!). Just looking at the book and reading her narrative makes me think I could knit any of the patterns and they would all make me look good and feel sexy. Very cool!

In case you didn't know, Annie and her family recently relocated from New Jersey to Minnesota. Somewhere in the move and settling down, her husband was diagnosed with a rare (I think) and painful type of cancer (Multiple Myeloma). She is selling a beautiful pattern on her website to help support the family during this time of need. Also, if you go to this site, you can enter contests and contribute to the cause. All proceeds go to help support the family while so much of their time and energy is spent dealing with Gerry's cancer.

Obviously, I've finally learned to put links into the posts. Enough for now. Next lesson (I hope) will be photographs.

All about the process

It is the strangest thing. I go into a new project with excitement - ready to do something new, try a different technique, use new colors - whatever. I will knit away, taking the project with me wherever I go (much to the Yorble's chagrin). Wow! It is grand.

Then, after I've been knitting a while, my enthusiasm wanes. I've learned the technique or tire of the color or the fiber. New knitting magazines, patterns, and websites start to distract me and draw my attention away from the project at hand.

No, I hold firm, I finish the work and bind off. Sometimes I even block (or felt or whatever) the piece. Then, it sits there. I've got a sweater for my sis-in-law, a felted bag for myself, and a lovely lace sun hat that I adore all waiting for me.

I've known for a very long time that I am all about the process. This is why I like making things for other folks. I don't care too much about making for myself 'cuz I don't need to wear/use/store it. I want to do it - then, I am finished.

I've got to kick-start myself into 'finishitis'. Maybe I'll take a day or two and do just that. I've got all the parts, yarns, fabric, etc. I just need the focus. But, wait, Vogue Knitting just arrived. Cripes, I just got through looking at the sample screens and had to pick my jaw up off of my desk.

I heard about http://www.ravelry.com/ in June. I, unfortunatley, didn't sign up until July 3rd. I am such a procrastinator!!!! Anyway, I heard about it through a podcast - probably Lime and Violet's (http://www.limenviolet.com/).

This is an amazing concept and looks like it will be even better in real life (so few concepts are). We will be able to keep track of our yarn and fiber stashes, patterns, books, works in progress, finished items, etc. We'll be able to see what others have completed, are working on, thinking about working on and so forth. We can look at patterns and see who has done them and in what yarn and see how it compares to what we are doing. (That all sounds the same - but, I know what I mean and so will you if you look at ravelry).

The folks creating this fantastic site are working hard. It is still in beta testing so you cannot just jump right in - not yet anyway. First, you have to sign up and wait. Then, hopefully, someday soon, you'll receive an invitation; then you can jump right in!!! I am slowly (and patiently) moving up in line. Now, there are fewer than 4000 people ahead of me in line and there are 11000+ behind me! There are already 12,229 people on it. Can you imagine a line like that for anything else?

I am trying NOT to kick myself for not signing up sooner. This is when procrastination is a bad thing!!! Sigh.

When I check my status, I get images of the Cold War era news stories from the USSR. There were reports (apocryphal?) that people had to stand in long lines for hours just to buy bread or shoes or cheese. People would get into a line without knowing what they were waiting for just in case they needed whatever it was. Well, don't wait! Get in line!!!

Bad Blogger, Bad!!

Well, I had such great plans for this blog . . . I still do. But, as they say . . . "the best laid plans . . ." Cripes, I cannot even remember the rest of the quotation. Anyway, I still want to use this for knitting and fiber arts info and blogging. My thought is that I can use this exclusively for fiber and my life blog won't interfere.

That being said, here goes.I spent the weekend in Tennessee with some wonderful friends. We try to get together at least once a year to craft. In fact, we've been doing this for nearly 15 year and, since the beginning, called these "stitch and bitch" weekends. That phrase has been co-opted but, that's okay. The weekend was to celebrate my birthday. Alabama girl and Missouri girl paid to fly me from Michigan to Tennessee. Since we are all watching out waistlines, I wanted to do something special that did NOT involve cake. The One Skein has a pattern for knitted cupcakes so, I did that. I used Lion Brand cotton in fuschia for the cupcake 'cups' and two white yarns (one with multicolored, bright, 'sprinkles) for the frosting. This was fun; I packaged the cupcakes with tissue paper in little cake boxes so that they'd look like baked goods. They were fun to do and were well received. I was listening to the Knit Science podcast after I did them and the podcaster was discussing how she was going to knit cupcakes. She described the exact same color combination for her. What a hoot. When I can figure out how, I will post a photo.

New(s) to me

This is a first for me on this site!
